The Commonwealth Institute analyzes not only the level of state support for public education, including pre-K-12 through the system of publicly supported colleges and universities, we also research the impacts of targeted programs supported by the state to increase the value of our state-supported education to the Commonwealth. In the Red: Early Warnings about Virginia’s Fiscal Outlook

Despite years of cuts to public services and slowly rebounding state revenues, Virginia faces an estimated budget shortfall of more than $800 million in the upcoming 2012-2014 biennial budget. Among the core services facing further cuts is K-12 eucation.

A new report shows a massive gap in the state budget between the funding required to support public services in Virginia and the funding available for them. Compared to pre-recession investment levels, the Commonwealth has reduced state support for K-12 education by $2.6 billion across this year and next year.
